An air conditioner manufacturer is planning to offer its employees free head coverings in an attempt to encourage women to wear the Islamic headscarves that many Muslims wear.
The headscarfs are a symbol of female emancipation and the “great Muslim tradition” of wearing them, said Mohammad Hossain, a manager at the Indian Air Conditioner and Refrigeration Co. Ltd.
Headscarf sales are a huge industry in India, where women make up about a third of the population.
Hossain said the headscarftes would be available to employees as a reward for wearing them during the holiday season.
“We would like to get them to wear them as an incentive to encourage them to keep wearing them,” Hossains told the Times of India newspaper.
He said the company is considering making the headcoverings available in different styles and sizes.
But some of the head coverages can be offensive to women.
Earlier this year, an employee of an air conditioners factory in Uttar Pradesh was sacked after she complained to her supervisor that the head covering she wore violated her religious freedom.
India’s Supreme Court earlier this month ruled that the country should allow people to wear headscarils.
